Milton Friedman and the rise and fall of the Phillips Curve
The trade-off between inflation and unemployment was first reported by A. W. Phillips in 1958—and so has been christened the Phillips curve. The simple intuition behind this trade-off is that as unemployment falls, workers are empowered to push for higher wages. Firms try to pass these higher wage costs on to consumers, resulting in higher prices and an inflationary buildup in the economy. The trade-off suggested by the Phillips curve implies that policymakers can target low inflation rates or low unemployment, but not both. During the 1960s, monetarists emphasized price stability (low inflation), while Keynesians more often emphasized job creation.
Milton Friedman and the rise and fall of the Phillips Curve ..
After a brief overview of Phillips' early life and career, I attempt to show why Phillips was probably unhappy with the paper that introduced the curve that came to be identified with his name and how, nevertheless, it came to be published.

Has the Phillips Curve Relationship Broken Down?
As history relates regarding the battlefields of the American Civil War, perhaps no other symbol matched the influence of ‘the colors.’ Often, the colors were the only indication of the success or failure of a battlefield movement visible to a soldier. Contemporary letters and official reports tell us that every man in the ranks kept a close watch on those magnificent banners that were carried by a special few. Phillips went on to carry his colors and proudly represented his regiment until he was killed by a sniper in the Battle of the Wilderness.

the evolution of the Phillips curve
Every February the UK celebrates LGBT History Month and we like to curate a season of films to mark the occasion. This year we decided to use as a jumping off point one of our favourite love stories of 2017, God’s Own Country. God’s Own Country won great acclaim in 2017 on the festival circuit with awards at both Berlin and Sundance. It was also a firm favourite amongst everyone here at the Picture House. While the depth of the film’s narrative clearly struck a chord with many I think the key to its success was how well it captured love in glorious, messy, passionate, and tender technicolour. Consequently, it’s perhaps unsurprising that when we asked the Director of the film, Francis Lee, what films inspired his feature debut, he gave us a fabulous list of 80s romances, all big hair and washed denim, alongside some of the best in contemporary Queer British cinema. From this longlist we have selected My Beautiful Laundrette (1984) and Working Girl (1988) to play alongside Gods Own Country and two of our other explorations of romantic love, Call My By Your Name (2017) and Carol (2015). As a group the five will hopefully play off one another, reminding us that however scary the wider world may look when living in love everything is achievable.

The Phillips-Hawkins Residence Hall, designed by Six Associates of Asheville, North Carolina, opened in 1967. The building was named on October 6, 1967, in honor of Charles “Mr. Charlie” Wiley Phillips, Director of Public Relations from 1935 to 1962 and (Class of 1920), an employee of the campus for over forty-five years, most notably in the Student Financial Aid Office. At its opening, Phillips served as the first dormitory for male students on campus. The adjacent Hawkins Residence Hall was occupied by female students. The residence hall was renovated in 1998.
