If itwas indeed under Monica's influence that he dissolved therelationship, it is unclear why, given the importance that he clearlyattached to it, he could not have resisted her influence. And if thechoice was his own, then he appears even more culpable. But then,given the travail of the soul's journey presented in the first sixbooks of the Confessions, perhaps this is precisely thepoint.
