If a pregnancy is unintentional, prenatal care should begin as soon as pregnancy is discovered. Ideally, however, if a person might become pregnant and would not have an abortion, pregnancy should be planned for, as behavior such as alcohol or other drug consumption early in fetal development can cause numerous permanent defects. People who might become pregnant include women who would be against having an abortion and are sexually active, even if they are using some form of contraception, as many contraceptives have significant failure rates. When conception and pregnancy are intended, people often take a great deal of time preparing, reading books, and learning about the process as well as preparing emotionally, physically, and sometimes financially. Individuals who live in homes that are smaller than they would like may move in advance of or during a pregnancy, including if they already have children but plan to expand their family size.
